Of late, society has been placing greater emphasis on take better care of our planet and of ourselves. So on my 40th birthday, I made a conscious decision to love myself by taking better care of me. It is a gift to myself that I know will have lasting effects not just on me but also on the people around me.
I wanted to be healthier. So I began exercising. I started taking daily walks around the park and eventually leveled up to running 3km every morning. I decided to cut down on processed food. When I did some research and found out what disgusting ingredients were in most processed food, I promised myself to eat less and less of it — and I’m sticking to my plan as best as I can.
I started to be more mindful of my appearance too. Not in a vain, superficial way, but because I wanted to feel great about myself all the time.
This was also about the time when I decided to look for hair care products with all-natural ingredients. It seemed only natural that if I was going to screen what was going into my mouth, I might as well do the same with what I was used on my skin and hair.
Why go for all-natural hair care products?
Hair products that have chemicals in them may give you the look and feel that you want here and now, but they can be damaging to the health of your hair over the long run. All-natural products are actually good for your hair. The more you use them, the healthier your hair will get! Would I rather have chemically treated superficially beautiful hair or truly healthy and natural beautiful hair? You know the answer to that!
I initially did research on what chemicals to avoid, but I found out soon enough that there were too many to keep track of. Sulfates, for one. Unfounded rumors that sulfates in shampoo cause cancer certainly led to my decision to look for all-natural shampoos. What are sulfates, anyway? Sulfates, essentially, are what make shampoos turn into a thick lather in the shower. This ingredient, which is standard for most shampoo and household cleaning products, has come under attack for causing frizziness and damaging colored hair. Forget cancer, the damage and frizz aren’t good to begin with.
Some reports say that ingredients to avoid when looking for your natural hair care products are petroleum/petrolatum, mineral oil/paraffin liquid and parabens. Natural products should also be free of several other ingredients, including propylene glycol, diethanolamine and triethanolamine (DEA and TEA, respectively), ethoxylated ingredients, imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea. Some reports made these chemicals sound deadly and cancer causing, while others stated they would simply “dry your hair out”.
I did not know what to believe and did not want to find out the hard way, so I thought using all-natural hair products was the safest bet.
There is something serene about holding a product in your hand and knowing that it is made from fruit, herbs, and oils — Ingredients that will do nothing but good things to your hair. I did not want to take any chances with chemicals leaching into my body down to my cells and doing me harm the long run!
